Right now, I am typing this on a brushed aluminum keyboard while letters pop instantly onto the 4K screen of a feathery “ultrabook.” I’m sitting on my front porch, overlooking a garden bursting with life, my belly full of espresso, organic frothed milk, and fresh mangoes.
You might look at this scene and think, “Wow, isn’t he Mr. Fancypants?”
Actually, no. This isn’t something to brag about. While I am enjoying the moment, I recognize it for what it really is: an indulgence of weakness. I have to watch myself carefully, lest I start to depend on this pampering as a baseline requirement for happiness.
When you strip away the glamour and look at the reality of this picture, the cracks appear:
The most rewarding part of this scenario isn’t the organic milk or the view—it is the fact that I am creating something. I am writing this for you. And frankly, the surrounding luxury is entirely unnecessary for that work.
If I were to get used to this lifestyle—to feel it was my inalienable right—I would be in trouble. I would have designed a life so narrow and delicate that a simple economic recession could topple it.
Yet, this is the standard operating procedure for most people.
When you borrow money to buy a consumable product, you are building a financial house of cards. You are acclimating yourself to a luxury you cannot afford, speeding up the treadmill you have to run on just to keep up. This is why the normalization of car loans—practiced by 90% of Americans—is a form of collective insanity.
But even those of us with a “stash” (savings) aren’t immune. We must guard against lifestyle creep just as vigilantly as the borrower.
One reason this blog resonates is that I don’t live in a cave. People see the house, the car, and the family and think, “Okay, this is a reasonable lifestyle, maybe I can try this frugality thing.”
However, there is a contradiction in preaching a smaller footprint while living in comfort. The way to reconcile this is to understand one fundamental psychological truth:
Luxury is a drug.
Think about standard drugs. Coffee gives a boost; alcohol loosens you up; ibuprofen stops pain. They have benefits, but they also have well-documented negatives and side effects. Only a fool overdoses on the positive effects while ignoring the crash.
Luxury behaves exactly the same way.
I remember taking a “hit” of this drug on a business trip. I stepped off a plane into warm tropical air, hopped into a waiting black Lincoln Town Car with leather seats, and was whisked to a luxury hotel.
My internal monologue immediately shifted: “I am Mr. Bigshot. I sit in V-8 powered chariots while others drive me. I eat internationally sourced meals prepared by chefs while people pay for my ‘priceless’ advice. THIS is what I deserve!”
A scientist could probably measure the chemical rush in my brain. It was the feeling of power and pampering.
It was fun, but it was an experience to be observed and laughed at—like being drunk with friends—not a lifestyle to adopt. Even that brief exposure made me start judging “lesser” hotels and dreading the heat of a normal day.
If you constantly maximize luxury, you become flabby and dependent. History is filled with kings and queens so accustomed to ornate surroundings that they became tyrants when their comforts were threatened. Today, we see it in A-list divas who demand specific limos or face legal action.
When you force yourself into the narrow nook of “only the best,” your perspective on the world constricts. Your ability to survive and thrive outside that bubble disappears.
Seeking to maximize luxury in every area of your life is as insane as saying, “Since I can afford it, I should remain intoxicated on whiskey and painkillers every waking hour.”
Even worse than the rich addict is the person with financial problems seeking luxury on credit. That is like a man with a failing liver reaching for vodka while surgeons try to operate.
So, here is the healthy approach: If you aren’t tough enough to abstain completely, go ahead and dabble. Treat luxury as an occasional exploration of human craftsmanship and comfort. But approach it from a position of strength, not the whining dependence that so many wealthy people develop.
Luxury is best appreciated as a strong, interesting contrast to your daily life—never the fabric of it.
